This is a classic but modern design and works well for any age, and in any fabric.  If you're willing to do a little fussy cutting on the center squares it also makes a great i-spy quilt!  The pattern includes instructions for a Crib, Throw, Twin, and Queen size.

It uses fat quarters or pre-cut 10" squares.  See the 2nd photo for material requirements.
